Our Top 10 Family Read-Alouds

One of my fondest memories are the hours that I spent cuddling with each of my three children on their beds, reading them books, while they peered over my shoulder, looking at the pictures.  This is a tradition that started when my oldest child, Brandon, was four or five years old and continued until he was a teenager.  I still remember the last book that we read together—Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.  It was his summer reading assignment, and the whole family enjoyed reading this book while we were on vacation!  Needless to say, I am delighted that my children have continued this tradition!  Brandon reads to his children every night.  They have made it through the entire Harry Potter series, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by Sinclair Lewis, and many more.  My daughter, Shannon, is currently reading her boys the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland, and my youngest daughter, Caitlin, reads picture books to her two-year-old every night before bed.  For those of you who are also reading out loud to your children, here is a list of some of my favorite read-aloud books.  Note these are all chapter books and some have wonderful illustrations, but we also have picture book lists on our website at thereadingbug.com. If you’ve stopped reading aloud as your children begin to read themselves, I encourage you to take time over the holidays to begin again with this rewarding family tradition!

Now, remember…new books do not necessarily mean better books though there are quite a few new books on this list. We have also included some titles that stand the test of time!

The Wings of Fire series  by Tui T. Sutherland is a popular fantasy series with a cult following among readers.  In the first book, readers are introduced to the seven dragon tribes of Pyrrhia.  Each tribe inhabits a different territory in Pyrrhia, and the dragons of each tribe have unique strengths, magical powers, and exhibit human-like behavior.  The tribes don’t always get along, so there are stories of war as they fight for power and control, which means parents should be aware that there are storylines that explore difficult topics such as war, murder, deceit and racism, that may be challenging for younger readers.  However, the series also explores real life issues relating to family, friendship and identity that can be used to facilitate meaningful conversations between parents and children who read the books together.  This is a great series for children, 10 years and above, who love action, adventure and fantasy.  However, I should share that my 8-year-old grandson is reading these books with his mother and loving them!
