Wow! We had a great weekend at The Reading Bug. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their sun-filled weekend to come visit us and attend our events!
On Saturday we had four authors at the store from 1 to 3:00. We started our around-the-world adventure with Ann Martin Bowler, who read to us from her book, Gecko’s Complaint—a Balinese folktale about those who see the faults of others, but not their own. Ann then showed us how to make their very own gecko to take home with them. Cynthia Chin-Lee then read to us from her books (Akira to Zoltan: Twenty-Six Men Who Changed the World and Amelia to Zora: Twenty-Six Women Who Changed the World) about men and women from the arts, sciences, ,sports and politics who have helped to change the world. After we were inspired by their stories, Cynthia helped us create self-portraits to remind us that we too can change the world! Then Christie Hale, author and illustrator of The East-West House: Noguchi’s Childhood in Japan, a wonderful book about the Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi, showed us how to make collages using everyday items like envelopes for our media. We also had Jennifer L. Holm, author of the very popular Babymouse series, at the store, making individual cartoons for all of our guests! It was a really great event!
On Sunday morning, author Faye-Lynn Wu, who was born and raised in Taiwan, talked to us about the many similarities between English and Chinese nursery rhymes. She then taught us how to sing several classic nursery rhymes in both English and Chinese. She and illustrator Kieren Dutcher then led a super-fun craft activity. We were so pleased to have both Faye-Lynn and Kieren at The Bug to share with us their exciting new book on Chinese and English Nursery Rhymes: Share and Sing in Two Languages. Thanks to all of you who attended these events. The authors were so pleased with the turn-out, and so were we! We have lots of events coming up this week and during the rest of May, so remember to look at our newsletter to see when they are scheduled and to drop by the store to participate!
